A hawker is a person who earns his living by hawking things and a street hawker is one who sells his articles by going from one place to another in the streets of towns or cities. He usually sells eatables, such as fruits, ice-creams, sweets and vegetables. He also sells cloth, crockery, cultery and toys for children. He usually carries his goods on his head but sometimes he carries them in a wheeled cart. He often rings a bell to attract his customers. Sometimes, he shouts in a sing-song tone to do this. A street hawker is a very tricky person. He sells goods of inferior quality and makes a lot of profit. He sometimes cheats his customers. He is generally a poor man. He has to work hard all day long to make both ends meet. In spite of all his faults, we should have love and sympathy for him.

Rather he comes when the housemasters are out of home and when the women are free from their household work and duties.

He carries things sometimes on his head, sometimes in his hands, sometimes in a bag and sometimes in a small hand-cart. He sells various kinds of things including sweets, drinks, books, pens, medicines and what not. He uses various tricks to attract the attention of the buyers. Sometimes he starts singing or even starts actinig. Sometimes he is funny and sometimes irritating. He sells things at a cheaper rate than that of the permanent shop-keepers. It is possible as he has not to pay any rent for a shop or salary to salesman. He is, as if, a moving shop and a salesman combined.
