A village fair is an annual affair in rural Bangladesh. It is generally held on the occasion of some 28. A Village Fair religious festivals or some local important events. It is an occasion for show, sale of various goods and entertainments. Some fairs last for a day or two and some for days together. Men, women and children eagerly wait for the day.

A village fair generally sits on the bank of a river, or a big canal or tank. Some fair also sits in an open field under a big ancient tree, or in the market place, or in the yard of a temple or by the side of a big road.

Preparation begins before the fair. First the ground is cleared and the whole area is fenced. Then rows of sheds made of bamboo and thatched roofs are built. In between the rows there is space for the people to move about. The stalls are arranged accordingly to the articles sold. A village fair serves as a sort of exhibition of village products. Things of many kinds and tastes are brought here for show and sale. Potters, carpenters, blacksmiths and weavers sell their hand made goods. 

Potters make various types of earthen pots, dolls and some fashionable goods and sell them at a high price. Carpenters sell horses, elephants, boats, carriages made of wood and many other beautiful things painted in an attractive way. Blacksmiths come with their things and sell them in the fair. Weavers come with their best fine clothes and sarees. Generally children gather around the stalls that sell sweets, toys and balloons and women are attracted mainly by those stalls that sell artificial jewellery, earthenwares, brassware, ironware, sharees etc.

মেলার আগে থেকেই শুরু হয় প্রস্তুতি। প্রথমে মাঠ পরিষ্কার করে পুরো এলাকা বেষ্টনী দেওয়া হয়। তারপর সারি সারি বাঁশ ও খড়ের ছাদ তৈরি করা হয়। সারির মাঝখানে মানুষের চলাফেরার জায়গা আছে। স্টল বিক্রি করা নিবন্ধ অনুযায়ী সাজানো হয়. একটি গ্রাম্য মেলা গ্রামীণ পণ্যের প্রদর্শনী হিসাবে কাজ করে। বিভিন্ন ধরণের এবং স্বাদের জিনিস এখানে প্রদর্শন এবং বিক্রয়ের জন্য আনা হয়। কুমোর, ছুতোর, কামার এবং তাঁতিরা তাদের হাতে তৈরি জিনিস বিক্রি করে।

কুমোররা বিভিন্ন ধরনের মাটির হাঁড়ি, পুতুল এবং কিছু ফ্যাশনেবল জিনিসপত্র তৈরি করে চড়া দামে বিক্রি করে। ছুতারেরা ঘোড়া, হাতি, নৌকা, কাঠের তৈরি গাড়ি এবং আরও অনেক সুন্দর জিনিস আকর্ষনীয় ভাবে আঁকা বিক্রি করে। কামাররা তাদের জিনিসপত্র নিয়ে এসে মেলায় বিক্রি করে। তাঁতিরা তাদের সেরা সুন্দর পোশাক এবং শাড়ি নিয়ে আসে। সাধারণত শিশুরা মিষ্টি, খেলনা এবং বেলুন বিক্রির স্টলের চারপাশে জড়ো হয় এবং মহিলারা মূলত সেই স্টলগুলি দ্বারা আকৃষ্ট হয় যা কৃত্রিম গহনা, মাটির পাত্র, পিতলের পাত্র, লোহার পাত্র, শেয়ার ইত্যাদি বিক্রি করে।

একটি গ্রাম মেলা গ্রামবাসীদের মধ্যে একটি মহান আনন্দ এবং উত্তেজনার উপলক্ষ। মেলায় সার্কাস মাগী চাউয়ের মেরি গো রাউন্ড, মোরগ লড়াই, জারিগান, যাত্রা ইত্যাদির আয়োজন করা হয়। সার্কাস পার্টিগুলি প্রায়ই মজার কৃতিত্ব দেখানোর জন্য একটি ছোট বাঘ, হাতি, বানর, ঘোড়া এবং ভালুক নিয়ে আসে। তবে সবচেয়ে বেশি ভিড় জমায় যাত্রা প্যান্ডেলে।

গ্রামের মেলারও কুফল আছে। এখানে জুয়ার আসর এসে নিরীহ মানুষকে প্রলুব্ধ করে প্রতারক, পকেটমার, অপরাধী ও গ্রামের মাস্তানরা মেলায় এসে নানা ধরনের অপকর্ম করে। কখনও কখনও শিশু হারিয়ে যায় এবং এটি পিতামাতার জন্য বড় উদ্বেগের কারণ হয়। গ্রামীণ মেলাও অস্বাস্থ্যকর পরিস্থিতির সৃষ্টি করে। মিষ্টির স্টল খোলা। তাদের ওপর কোনো শেড নেই। মিষ্টির উপর মাছি বসে এবং তাদের উপর ধুলো পড়ে। মানুষ এসব মিষ্টি কিনে খায়। ফলে কলেরা ও আমাশয় রোগের প্রাদুর্ভাবের সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে।
