প্রিপজিশন কি | প্রিপজিশন কাকে বলে উদাহরণ দাও

Pre শব্দের অর্থ পূর্বে এবং position শব্দের অর্থ অবস্থান। সুতরাং যে word Noun বা Noun equivalent-এর পূর্বে বসে Sentence-এর অন্তর্গত অন্য word-এর সহিত ঐ Noun বা Noun equivalent-এর সাথে সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করে, তাকে Preposition বলে ।

Classes of Prepositions

Preposition-কে উহার গঠন ও কার্যের ভিন্নতা অনুসারে ছয় ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়।

1. Simple Preposition. 

2. Double Preposition. 

3. Compound Preposition. 

4. Phrase Preposition. 

5. Participle Preposition. 

6. Disguised Preposition.

1. Simple Preposition: সাধারণতঃ একটি word দ্বারা Simple Preposition গঠিত হয়। যেমনঃ At, on, by, for, from, with, after, of, off.

2.Double Preposition: যখন দু'টি Simple Preposition একত্র বা যুক্ত হয়ে একটি Preposition এর মত ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন তাকে Double Preposition বলে। যেমনঃ into (in+to), within (with+in), out of ইত্যাদি।

3. Compound Preposition: Noun Adjective Adverb 4 Simple Preposition Preposition গঠিত হয়, তাকে Compound Preposition বলে । Compound Preposition গঠন করতে সাধারণতঃ on এর স্থলে a এবং by এর স্থলে b বা be হয়। যেমনঃ across (on+cross), about (on+by+out), behind (by+hind), before (by+fore), above (on+by+up), below (by+low), along (on+long), between (by+twin), beside (by+side), beyond (by+yond), ইত্যাদি।

4. Phrase Preposition: যদি দুই বা ততোধিক Preposition একত্র হয়ে একটি একক Preposition রূপে ব্যবহৃত্ C Phrase Preposition : on account of, by dint of, by means of, in front of, in stead of, look for

5. Participle Preposition: Present Participle বা Past Participle যদি Preposition-এর মত ব্যবহত হয় তখন তাকে Participle Preposition বলে । যেমনঃ

He saw the people walking past him.

Considering his age, he was pardoned.

according, assuming, concerning, regarding, speaking ইত্যাদি।

6. Disguised Preposition: কোন কোন ক্ষেত্রে on, at, of, per (Preposition) এর পরিবর্তে a বা o' ব্যবহৃত হয়। এরূপ a বা o কে Disguised Preposition বলে। যেমনঃ It is six o clock (o-of) He went a hunting (on). He comes here thrice a week.

Detached Prepositions

অনেক সময় Interrogative Pronoun (বা Adverb) বা Relative Pronoun (বা Adverb) এর সাথে সম্পর্কযুক্ত Preposition উহাদের পূর্বে না বসে বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে উহাদের পরে বসে। এরূপ Preposition-কে Detached Preposition বলে । যেমনঃ

Where has he come from? 

What is Jashore famous for? 

What are you looking for? 

Other Parts of Speech Used as Prepositions

Noun: Despite his willingness, he could not attend the meeting.

Adjective: I live near my college.

Verb: All ran away save he.

Conjunction: None but the graduates should apply.

Participle: The old man saw the people walking past him.

The Same Word May be an Adverb or Preposition

কিছু কিছু Word কখনও Adverb কখনও Preposition-রূপে ব্যবহৃত হয়। ব্যবহারের ভিন্নতার জন্য মূলতঃ এদের পার্থক্য হয়ে থাকে । এরা যখন Object গ্রহণ করে তখন এদেরকে Preposition বলে। আর Object গ্রহণ না করে যখন Noun, Pronoun ও Interjection ব্যতীত অন্যান্য Parts of Speech-কে modify করে তাদেরকে Adverb বলে। 

Up: 

• He went up (Adverb).
• Jerry went up the hill (Preposition)

Down:

• I sat down. (Adverb)
• Tears ran down her face. (Preposition)

On:

• I walked on. (Adverb)
• He put the book on the table. (Preposition)

এই জাতীয় আরো কিছু গুরুত্বপূর্ণ Preposition: above, about, across, along, before, behind, below, besides, by, in, near, off, over, past, round, since, through, under.

Special Preposition

than ও but উভয়ই Conjunction কিন্তু কখনও কখনও Preposition রূপে ব্যবহৃত হয়। তখন তাদেরকে Special Preposition বলে ।

than সাধারণতঃ তুলনা বুঝাতে Noun বা Pronoun-এর পূর্বে Preposition-রূপে ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ

• I am older than her.
• Nobody understands the situation better than he.
• None but the virtuous are blessed.

Preposition With Verbs

অনেক সময় Preposition Verb-এর পূর্বে সংযুক্ত হয়ে নতুন Verb গঠন করে। যেমনঃ Overlook (over look), override (over+ride), overdraft (over+draft), overdue (over+due), overdose (over+dose), withstand (with+stand). withhold (with+hold), withdraw (with+draw), uphold (up+hold), upturn (up+turn)

অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে Preposition Verb-এর পরে বসে স্বতন্ত্রভাবে অবস্থান করে। যেমনঃ He hankers after money. I look upon him as my brother.

Uses of Some Prepositions

01. At, in: বড় স্থান বা সময়ের পূর্বে in এবং ছোট স্থান বা সময়ের পূর্বে at বসে। যেমনঃ He lives at Deana in Khulna. He went there at 7 o'clock in evening.

Note: সময়ের পূর্বে in ব্যবহার করলে তারপর the বসে। কিন্তু at ব্যবহার করলে the বসে না। Night, noon, dusk, dawn ইত্যাদির পূর্বে at বসে এবং morning, evening, afternoon ইত্যাদির পূর্বে in বসে ।

02. In, into: কোন কিছুর ভিতরে অবস্থিত বা স্থিতিশীলতা বুঝালে in এবং ভিতরে প্রবেশ বা গতিশীলতা এবং রূপান্তরিত হওয়া বুঝালে into বসে। 

• The students are in the room. 
• They entered into the room. 
• Water changes into vapour.

03. On, in, at: দিন বা তারিখের পূর্বে on. মাস বা বছরের পূর্বে in এবং নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের পূর্বে at বসে । I shall meet you at 5 o'clock on Sunday in January.

04. After, in: অতীত কালের ব্যাপক সময় (period of time) বুঝাতে after এবং ভবিষ্যৎকালে ব্যাপক সময় (period of time) বুঝাতে in ব্যবহৃত হয়।

• I returned to my native village after six months.
• We shall finish the work in a week.

05. In, within: ভবিষ্যৎকালে ব্যাপক সময়ের শেষ মুহূর্ত বুঝাতে in এবং সেই সময় উত্তীর্ণ হবার পূর্বে বুঝাতে within ব্যবহৃত হয় । যেমনঃ Mr. Ahad will come in a month. (একমাসের শেষ মুহূর্তে )

We will finish the work within a month. (এক মাস উত্তীর্ণ হবার পূর্বে)

06. In, by, before: ভবিষ্যৎকালের ব্যাপক সময়ের পূর্বে in, এবং নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের পূর্বে by বা before বসে। যেমনঃ 

• 1 shall have finished reading the book by or before 5 p. m. 
• He will come in a month.

07. In, on, to: সীমার মধ্যে বুঝাতে in, সীমার বাহিরে বুঝাতে to এবং সীমার উপরে বুঝাতে on ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ 

• The Sunderban is to the south of the country.
• Dhaka is on the Buriganga.
• Dhaka City College is in the heart of the city.

08. In, after: Future Tense-এ in এবং Past Tense-এ after ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ 

• My father will come from the states in a week.
• His father died after two months.

9. Since, from, for: নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের পূর্বে since বা from এবং ব্যাপক সময়ের পূর্বে for বসে। Since দ্বারা শুধু অতীতের নির্দিষ্ট সময় এবং from দ্বারা সব tense এর সময় বুঝায়। Since-এর পূর্বে সর্বদা Perfect বা Perfect Continuous Tense বসে ।

• It has been raining since morning.
• It has been raining for two hours.

10. Beside, besides: “পাশে” অর্থ বুঝাতে beside এবং “ইহা ছাড়া/অধিকন্তু” বুঝাতে besides ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ 

• He sat beside me.
• Besides this pen I have two other pens.

11. Between, among: দু'য়ের মধ্যে between এবং দু'য়ের অধিক হলে among ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ

• Divide the mangoes between the two boys.
• Divide the mangoes among them.

12. By, with: যে করে তার পূর্বে by এবং যার দ্বারা (instrument) করে তার পূর্বে with বসে। যেমনঃ

The tiger was killed by the hunter with a gun.

13. On, over: লাগালাগি অবস্থায় উপরে হলে on এবং space রেখে উপরে হলে over ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ 

• The book is on the table.
• The clock is over the cupboard.

Meaning of Some Prepositions

At

(i) স্থানঃ He lives at Kakrail. (ii) সময়ঃ He came at 3. p. m. (iii) মাত্রাঃ The coach runs at sixty miles an hour. (iv) f: He came at me. (v) : Rice sells at Tk. 20 per Kg. (vi) : He did it at his own risk. (vii) লক্ষ্যঃ He aimed at the tiger. (viii) মুখ ভেংচানঃ He faced at me. (ix) বিদ্রুপ অর্থেঃ We should not laugh at the poor. (x): He looked at the picture.

About

(1): I told you everything about this matter. (ii) 14: The train is about to start. (111) 618 The news of his death spread all about. (iv) : I talked to him about the business.

Above

(i) উপরঃ The sky is above us. (ii) উচ্চাসনঃ He is above in the society. (iii) উৎকৃষ্টঃ He is above all corruptions. (iv) : Now the time is above 10 a. m. (v): I value character above everything.

After

(i) পরেঃ He went away after having dinner. (ii) পিছু পিছুঃ They ran is a good man. (iv) : The shirt is after my choice. 

Against

(i) বিরুদ্ধেঃ He is against me. (ii) পাশেঃ He kept the bag against the wall. (iii) প্রতিকূলেঃ He is swimming against the current. (iv) : We should save something against the rainy day. (v) : Fifty students passed against seventy?

By

(i) পাশেঃ He sat by me. (ii) কাছাকাছি সময়েঃ He will come here by 4. p. m. (iii) অনুসারেঃ What is the time by your watch? (iv) শপথঃ He swore by Allah. (v) কাজের ধারাঃ I pulled him by the ear. (vi) পরিমাপঃ Our class room is 30 feet by 40 feet. (vii) : The letter was written by him.

Note: যাতায়াত বা গমনার্থে By land (স্থল পথে), by air ( আকাশ পথে), by water (নৌপথে), by boat, by launch, by steamers, by bus, by train

Behind

(i) পিছনেঃ He fell behind me. (ii) অসাক্ষাৎঃ We should not speak ill of one behind his back. (iii) বিলম্বঃ You are behind time.

Before

(1): He went away before dinner. (ii): He stood before me. (iii) : Prevention before cure. 

For

(i) পরিবর্তেঃ He acted for me. (ii) দিকেঃ He left for home. (iii) স্বত্ত্বেওঃ For all his wealth he is dissatisfied. (iv) সময় ব্যাপিয়াঃ I am reading for two hours. (v) পক্ষেঃ I will not speak for you. (vi) মনে করাঃ I took him for a good man. (vii) : I could not go to college for my illness. (viii) : Della sold her hair for twenty dollars. (ix) : The boy was pardoned for his age.

From

(i) : He has returned from abroad. (ii) 27: What is the difference between red from orange. (iii) Ge: We draw inspiration from our martyred soldiers.

In

(i) সময়ঃ I will come in an hour. (ii) স্থানঃ I live in Dhaka. (iii) অবস্থাঃ He is not in good health. (iv) দৃষ্টি C: We should work in the interest of the country.

Of

(i) জাতঃ He comes of a respectable family. (ii) সম্পর্কেঃ Do you know anything of this? (iii) অধিকারভুক্তঃ It is the car of my uncle. (iv) : The house is made of brick. (v) They live in the city of Khulna. (vi) : He is devoid of courtesy. (vii) : He died of heart failure. 

On

(i): The book is on the table. (ii) : He wrote an essay on "Jute." (iii) : I congratulated him on his success. (iv) f: The cow lives on grass. (v): He met me on Monday. (vi) : On hearing the news of his mother's death, he went home. (viii) : He was released on the ground of his argument.
